Boy's Life might have its problems, but it doesn't diminish the warm and fuzzy feeling that accompanies the reading. Cory Mackenson was my close friend up to the point at which I screamed to Cory and his friends to wait for me as I peddled my bike. He is currently working on the eighth Matthew Corbett novel, The King of Shadows. As Cory searches for a killer, he learns more about the meaning of both life and death. You could sit on the porch, a glass of lemonade at your side and the radio tuned to a baseball game, and watch the clouds slowly roll toward you. Cory comes to realize as he grows that Granddaddy Jaybird is a selfish person who cares for no one but himself.
Sometimes, this is exactly the kind of affable fable that I want and need to read. This is story telling at its best! These memories of who I was and where I lived are important to me. A lot of people want a satisfying answer to that. I need the memory of magic if I am ever going to conjure magic again. Cory is grossed out by the Demon and is happy when she focuses her affections on another boy.
I have forgotten a lot of events from my childhood, some still stand out. Sal, Robert, and Angel were on their way to complete and utter fun. Boy's Life is a story of coming of age in the south, an all too real reality mixed with the magic and fantasy of childhood. Later, Cory learns that the Demon becomes a chemist for DuPont, but gives up her job in favor of becoming a performance artist. I know what you mean about wanting a book you can write in and highlight.
But I knew… The book taught me important life lessons. I wolfed it down in less than 24 hours. Cory returns to Zephyr many years later with his own family. I also very much appreciate the author's acknowledgement section at the end as the various cultural references take me back to moments from my youth and their attendant memories. If there's a problem, you have to deal with it, and you alone. This book is truly a masterpiece of literature - simply because of the feelings it invokes in the reader. A few days later, Cory and his friends meet at the baseball field.
I can also say that I departed back to myself — to my memories of being a boy — just like Cory. McCammon is a fine writer; he creates some evocative characters; he lays out some of the most remarkable scenes that I have ever read; some of his passages threw me back to my own youth; he can turn a phras Look, up in the sky!! Murder and quaint childhood memories for the win! What a perfect moment to read such a memory-laden book. Because he did not stand up, in that office in New York. How did I get here and can I recapture. I was reeling, my head was spinning and after I sobered up I was still a tad confused and disenchanted. That's an important distinction because isn't narrated by a twelve year-old, but by a forty year old reminiscing on his formative years.

This was a buddy read with the crème de la crème of Pantless folk — they know who they are. However the person in overall charge is the Prime Minister or the President, who is elected by the people democratically. I was struck by something that Cory's dad noted to his son, that being when it rains while the sun is shining, it means the devil is beating his wife. I should be thrown into the murky depths of Saxon's Lake, or, even worse, made to spend a week with Grandaddy Jaybird. A mixture of fiction and biography as mentioned by the author himself in his letter to the readers. Men and women are still children deep in their hearts. Gordo, on the other hand, never learns his lesson and eventually dies in a holdup when he is shot by the owner of the convenience store he is trying to rob.
